By using a methodology based on deep learning, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by collaborating with Sony were able to produce holograms almost instantly. According to Liang Shi, lead author of the study and a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT “People previously thought that with existing consumer hardware, it was impossible to do real-time 3D holography calculations…”

Real-Time 3D holography with Deep Neural Networks
One needs to understand that the science behind holograms is completely different than that of a photograph. Photograph tends to encode the brightness of each light wave, and hologram tends to encode the brightness and phrase of each light wave, thus offering a more faithful image.
Since each point has a different depth in the scene, thus the same operations cannot be applied to all.
Researchers used new scenes that consist of complex, variable shapes and colours, and pixel depth distributed from the background to the foreground to create holograms in the new database. And for managing the conclusion, they have also used a new set of calculations based on physics, which resulted in photorealistic training data. Each pair of images is required to learn and then modifies the parameters for doing your own calculations, improving the ability to create holograms. This study shows that tensor holography can create holograms from images with depth information in just milliseconds. This is formed by typical computer-generated images and thus can be easily calculated from a multi-camera setup.
A real-time 3D holography can enhance a host of systems, from virtual reality to 3D printing. The team led by Shi has highlighted how the new system can help all the virtual reality viewers out there to immerse in a more realistic scenario without facing the eye strain issues or other side effects of continued use of the virtual environment.
I think everybody can remember this line – “Technology and innovation are the only hope” told by Princess Leia to Obi-Wan. Honestly, it will not be long where we will start communicating with each other through hologram interfaces just like what we saw in the Star Wars movies.
