Enter Purism:

A company that focuses on smart technology for people who care about privacy and security. Purism is a unique hardware and software company that aims to provide the tools that will help you outsmart your current computer, thus increasing the use of your time-on-site rather than in front of it. Founded in 2013, the company is becoming increasingly popular among computer security professionals, enterprises, and even recreational users alike as they look to be more secure with their data.

The security industry remains a young and in-demand field as more and more people are trying to protect themselves online. There are many different ways to approach this.  Being able to combine both hardware and software into one package is an exciting prospect. Purism does exactly this by providing high-quality laptops and phones.  run on Linux-based operating systems with no proprietary software whatsoever. Aside from being free of the control of big corporations that could use their devices to spy on their users, these laptops also don’t require any proprietary drivers or firmware updates. In an age where everyone is terrified about the implications of new technology, it’s reassuring to know that Purism will always be there for its users.

The company’s flagship product is its Librem laptop, which combines the best of both hardware and software in a fully customizable package. The Librem laptop features an i7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. This computer is also completely open-source, meaning that anyone can access the code on the processor to make sure it doesn’t contain any back doors or certain protocols that would allow remote access to the machine.

The Librem also comes preinstalled with PureOS:

A Linux distribution runs via Trisquel (another popular Linux distro) and was developed from scratch by Purism. Although the operating system can be changed to anything, it is designed to work on all of Purism’s computers. The company also produces the PureOS-powered smartphone, adding another layer of security and privacy to its users. The PureOS-powered phone is available in limited quantities and features a 5″ 1080p display, powered by the MediaTek MTK6735T chipset.

Well-built and durable

The Librem laptop feels extremely well-built and durable. The entire device weighs 2.5 pounds. It could become heavy for someone who wants to carry it around frequently or work out with it while using different apps. The device features a 15.6″ 1920×1080 display with a glare-resistant matte finish. This upgrade is great for watching movies in different environments and is able to withstand most weather conditions. While the keys are pretty close together, it doesn’t feel too cramped on the Librem laptop. It’s quite nice actually; it feels like a solid laptop with some heft to it that will withstand any hardships you throw at it.

The trackpad is also nothing short of amazing. While not huge, it’s large enough to have a wavy but very responsive feel to it. It’s extremely sensitive and can be used for all usual mouse actions. Sometimes it does take time before the trackpad responds after pressing down on the touchpad. But this seems to be a common problem with most newer laptops.

The laptop has no trouble running any games. I watched the entire season of Mr. Robot in 1080p and never once experienced a frame rate issue. The screen is also able to run quickly, with some apps taking around 1-2 seconds to load up. I didn’t face any issues while using the laptop for multi-tasking. And because it’s an SSD, software installs are super fast as well. The laptop has 16 GB of RAM and a 256-bit AES encryption key. It is impressive but some may wish for an upgrade in such a thin device. Purism is working to discover a solution. Users can add more RAM in the future without having to worry about compatibility.
